A subaward is a legal instrument between two organizations (the "prime recipient / prime awardee" and "subrecipient / subawardee") that delegates a portion of the work undertaken in a project. A subaward is a mechanism that can be used under assistance (subgrant or subagreement) or acquisition (subcontract). The granting and management of subawards is one of the main vehicles of international development. The performance of subawards can determine the success or failure of a program.
